Statewide tour stops in Jacksonville to expand broadband

A statewide tour to improve broadband and provide high-speed internet made its last stop in Jacksonville Wednesday night. Experts in the field came to find a solution to allow municipalities to enter public and private partnerships to provide high-speed internet. Currently, a North Carolina policy prohibits municipal governments from doing so. Mayor Pro Tem Michael Lazzara said the city is not looking to be internet providers. He adds most rural towns are underserved. Onslow County Schools said at Wednesday night's meeting, they've faced dilemmas and are adamant to get better broadband. Lazzara said there is broadband in Jacksonville but inadequate service. However, by providing better internet service, there will be a greater opportunity for economic growth, can improve healthcare and the school system. Lazzara said this will be possible through community support and talking to our legislators about the need for broadband.
