We see real potential in the use of small cells, and that's why we believe in continuing to build out Philadelphia's wireless infrastructure. To date, we've deployed a small cell network of approximately 574 low-powered antennas called "nodes" that sit close to the ground, are connected by fiber optic cable, and can handle large amounts of data at high speeds. The nodes are designed to provide immediate enhancements to mobile coverage and capacity—and help ease Philadelphia's transition to next-generation networks such as 5G, as well as to a variety of beneficial "smart city" innovations.

Why Philadelphia needs more wireless infrastructure.

One of America’s most populous cities with more than six million people in its metropolitan area, Philadelphia is both traditional and cutting-edge. Its local economy is thriving, with robust industries in food, biotechnology, telecommunications, IT and finance driving a dynamic business environment. Philadelphia’s neighborhoods are equally vibrant, with trendy districts, upscale enclaves, and family-friendly suburbs all sitting side by side. And in 2016, a record 41 million visitors flocked to the city to experience its unique blend of art, culture, sports and history. 

Fast, reliable wireless connectivity is essential to everyday life in Philadelphia—and particularly in the area of public safety, with 80 percent of all emergency calls to police, firefighters and first responders now originating on mobile devices. As demand for mobile data grows exponentially and Philadelphia’s existing wireless infrastructure bears an increasingly heavy burden, small cell solutions—or “small cells”—have garnered more interest. Small cells are used in cities nationwide to complement existing wireless infrastructure, such as towers, adding much-needed coverage and capacity in highly populated areas.

Where we're installing small cells.

Since small cells often are inconspicuously installed on right of way infrastructure like street signs, utility poles and streetlights, they blend into their surroundings and preserve the aesthetics of their environment. Working in partnership with city staff, we plan to enable improved wireless carrier service while keeping Philadelphia’s character intact.
