Corning supports proposed state broadband act

The Corning City Council unanimously authorized a letter of support for a proposed act to overturn an FCC order that limited local jurisdictions’ authority over wireless cell phone infrastructure. HR 530, also known as the Accelerating Wireless Broadband Development by Empowering Local Communities Act, is being proposed by Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-Calif.), who is asking for local governments’ support. “The Federal Communications Commission made an order in September that preempted local authority of small service wireless towers,” said City Manager Kristina Miller. “The new law severely impacts our ability to charge fees. HR 530 returns local decision-making to the city.”
