Our plan is to supplement Prince George's County's existing wireless infrastructure by deploying a small cell network of 390 low-powered antennas called "nodes"—the first of its kind in the county—that sit close to the ground, are connected by fiber optic cable, and can handle large amounts of data at high speeds. Small cells can pave the way for next-generation networks such as 5G, which promise to expand future-focused innovations including citywide data sharing across many areas in Prince George's County.

Why Prince George's County needs more wireless infrastructure.

With a population of more than 863,000, Washington, D.C.’s dynamic neighboring county of Prince George’s offers a friendly business climate, skilled workers and an outstanding quality of life. It’s home to many diverse urban, suburban and rural communities; top-tier educational institutions such as the University of Maryland; a world-class technology and aerospace sector; and many federal facilities including Joint Base Andrews Naval Air Facility Washington, NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). It also welcomes many visitors every year to a wealth of recreational, sports and cultural attractions—National Harbor, Six Flags America, FedEx Field and countless festivals and events. 

Here, demand for mobile data is growing exponentially—and improved wireless connectivity is a necessity, primarily for public safety. Today, 80 percent of 911 calls are placed from a mobile device, and fast, reliable wireless connectivity is critical in providing immediate access to police officers, firefighters and other first responders. Small cell solutions, or “small cells,” have emerged as a key component of upgrading and enhancing Prince George’s County’s existing wireless infrastructure. Small cells often are used to complement existing infrastructure, such as towers, to add much-needed coverage and capacity in highly populated areas.

Where we're installing small cells.

Since small cells often are inconspicuously installed on right of way infrastructure like street signs, utility poles and streetlights, they blend into their surroundings and preserve the aesthetics of their environment. Working in partnership with city staff, we plan to enable improved wireless carrier service while keeping Prince George's County’s character intact.
